Consultations for parents and psychological therapy for children and adolescents

When to seek help?

Children often reflect the difficulties they face in their behavior. Adults equipped with coping mechanisms may not understand why their children behave the way they do. And often the answer is simple: because children do not yet have the skills to cope with difficulties. They do not have the tools to deal with problems, stress and low self-esteem. If your child unexpectedly changes behavior, begins to withdraw from activities and social relationships, if he or she displays inappropriate emotional reactions, this is a clear signal of the need to consult a specialist.

The most common difficulties of children

Behavior Problems

High emotional reactivity or oppositional-defiant behavior. Outbursts of anger and frequent arguments with parents or siblings. Failure to follow rules at home or school.

School Difficulties

They rely on difficulties
with schooling that are not due to the child's lack of abilities. Despite the efforts made, children are often unable to meet the expectations of their parents or teachers.

Anxiety disorders

These include excessive worrying, irrational fears and difficulty coping with stress. If left untreated, anxiety disorders can lead to serious difficulties and interfere with a child's development.

Social skills

the child has difficulties establishing relationships with peers, isolates himself from other children, and does not want to take part in activities. Reacts with anger or fear when leaving home

Emotional difficulties

The child may be anxious, overly reactive, and show a lack of interest in the world around him. There may also be problems with concentration and learning difficulties.

Low self-esteem

The belief in one's own incompetence dominates, which leads to a negative self-image. Self-esteem and acceptance decrease, which results in a feeling of powerlessness in children. Social functioning becomes much more difficult

First consultation with a psychologist

I invite the parents themselves to the first meeting so that I can understand the problem they are reporting with. This first consultation is very important to get to know the source of the difficulty. It is good to have available medical documentation and an opinion from a school or kindergarten. Working with a child is working in a group, which means that the adults in the child's life indirectly participate in the child's recovery process. The first consultation with parents can take place online.

The initial assessment aims to:

  1. Understanding the nature of the child's difficulties
  2. Investigate any safety concerns
  3. Development of a therapeutic plan and intervention
  4. Preparing recommendations to be implemented at home

A properly conducted interview and a properly made diagnosis often shed new light on the problems presented. We treat diagnosis as the beginning of treatment, because understanding the difficulties is always the first step to introducing change.

How can therapy help your child?

Diagnosis

A properly diagnosed diagnosis is often a turning point in a family's life. To diagnose it, I use psychological tools and tests, interviews with parents and the child, and opinions from the school.

Action plan

Developing an effective action plan and therapeutic process is an extremely important step in restoring balance in family life. Parents will learn how to talk, work and support their child in proper development.

The therapeutic process

Based on the diagnosis, I will conduct a therapeutic process to improve the child's functioning and reduce undesirable psychological symptoms.

Recommendations and recommendations

Depending on the problem the family presents with, more comprehensive help may be necessary. Child development is a very dynamic and complex process, the appropriate support of which is crucial for the proper development and functioning of the child.

A child's meeting with a psychologist

I invite parents with their child to the second session. It is worth explaining to your child where and to whom he or she is going. You should not scare a child or use expressions that may offend him. The child should feel supported and cared for by the caregivers.

Subsequent consultations will take place stationary, in the office. In the case of younger children, one of the parents should be present during the session. Older children aged 15 and over can decide whether they want their parent to take part in the sessions.

About every 4-5 sessions with the child, parents will be invited to consultations with me without the child's participation. The aim is to summarize previous activities and work, assess and evaluate their effectiveness, and propose actions to support the child in the home environment. Working with a child means working with the entire family system and the involvement of caregivers has a huge impact on the course of therapy.
